HELP… THE WEDDING FAVORS!!!

Anyone who has already gotten married… or is about to… has probably made this exclamation at least once!

The “bomboniera,” a name derived from the French “bon-bon” (sweet), originated in Italy at the end of the 15th century: nobles used to carry small boxes containing sweets and candies made from sugar, a substance imported from the Indies and very expensive at that time.

The less wealthy, on the other hand, were content with paper or fabric bags containing sweets.

But it was only in 1896, with the wedding of Vittorio Emanuele, Prince of Naples and future King of Italy, and Elena of Montenegro, that the wedding favor became a gift from the couple to the guests.

Thus, the tradition of the wedding favor as we know it today was born, as a “symbol” to remember the wedding day and as a way to thank the guests for the gifts received.

Wedding favors have become a tradition and a part of the culture of modern Italy, spreading to other countries as well.
